Is there a computer program I can use to help my toddler learn to read?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: computer games for toddlers

As he can be left on the computer for a couple of hours at a time playing games on his own, but he won’t sit down with a book for love nor money.

He’s three, and uses the computer better than some adults.
Once when I came home from shopping with him, he turned on the computer and started his games up when I wasn’t in the room, he’s been doing it since he was 2 1/2. He’s a sharp little bunny. Really I’m not pushing him. He’s just a ludicrously fast learner with a gift for technology, he works the gameboy better than I can. Obscenely proud mummy.

He liked the PBS site!

Try pbskids.org – Word World and Super Why are good games on there…

Also, try the LeapFrog WordLaunch…it’s a game that hooks right into your TV using an A/V cord. It’s great.

My 5 y/o twins love the computer, but they also love reading. We have them signed up for mynoggin.com and a few others… Does he have one of those hand-held leapsters? my sons use those all the time, and they say on the label which skills they teach.

Also I agree with answer #1 ‘Super Why’ is great.

Maybe Leap Frog has some that go with their Click Start keyboard. The Leap Frog learning DVDs have worked for us. They do learning alphabet, reading, or math depending on what you get. They are pretty engaging too.

he is clever to use a computer, but shouldnt do so for long periods. Remember he will have to behave like others at shchool!
My son who just turned 3, likes the computer- laptop= and can move the mouse around & click etc and we use it a few times a week for a few mins but he loves books.

Try leap pad systems- have computerised bits but teach reading.

TV is a good teacher in short bursts. But dont fixate too much on learning at his age!

Good ways are when you are out, looking at number plates etc sign posts, letters that kind of thing.

But computers turn to computer games and that can cause real concerntration development problems. TOo many children play computer games all day but wont sit & read. At 3, of course , lots dont so no need to worry but get him out of it before it is too late!!

They have learning laptops that are inexpensive and pretty nice. I got my nephew a Thomas one and he LOVED it. You can find them now with almost any character on both Amazon and Walmart… probably Target too.

I am sure you have heard of hooked on phonics. They have now made a version for toddlers I am not sure how it works but would definitely be worth looking into. Also the whiz kid game which they play on different cards and helps them to recognize letters and sounds.
