Characteristics of Toddler Computer Games

When looking for computer games for toddlers it is important to understand that both your toddler and you will be engaging in playing the game.  It is not likely that a young child will be able to play a computer game by themselves, so you will have to help them and teach them until they get the hang of things.  With that in mind, it is important that you choose a game that will entertain and engage the child and that will also be entertaining for you.

Toddlers are notorious for their short attention spans, so keep this in mind when choosing computer games for toddlers.  You want something that will be interactive and that will grab their attention.  You want a game that will challenge them and that will hold their interest for a period of time.

Computers are not just for fun.  Many of the computer games for toddlers on the market offer educational sides to them.

This makes the idea of playing computer games appealing for adults.  When your child is playing they are not only having fun and getting acquainted with the computer, but also learning.  Many games teach the fundamental things like colors, shapes and letters.

You should also be interested in the technical aspects of the game.  It should be easy to use and install.  You want to look for a pause feature so you can stop the game if need be.  Also ensure that it is visually appealing with graphics and that it offers good sound to really engage the toddler.

Options

There are many different options in where to find computer games for toddlers.  You can buy software that you will install into your computer.  It is suggested before doing this, that you try to get a free trial of the program.  This will allow you to try it out and make sure it is something that your child will enjoy and not get bored of quickly.

You can also find games online.  You go to a website that hosts the games and can play them online.  This option allows you to find several games to play so your child does not have to play the same game over and over.  Most times these games can be found for free, which is another perk.

You also have the option of toddler computers.  These are toy computers that work like a real computer but are built to withstand the handling from a toddler.  They also are built to be simpler to use and come with built in games.

No matter what type of computer games for toddlers you decide upon, you should find that introducing your child to the computer at an early age has benefits.  Your child will be learning many things through their computer game and it is an experience that will not only keep them entertained, but also serve as a stepping stone so that when they start school they are ready to start using computers at an advanced level.

When Does A Game Become Educational, And When Is It Just Entertainment?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: toddler computer

This is a very important point for teachers and parents. When does a computer game become education, and when is it just entertainment?

What are the critical aspects that make a game educational, and something that would make us as teachers and parents spend our dollars, time and energy on it?

In my area of music there are all sorts of games: Some of the music games which are available today are nothing more than an evolution of the toy guitar that you’d give a toddler to play with. Some are almost like playing a real instrument, with real instrument sizes and materials used.

Where do we draw the line?  Music teachers are definitely split on this issue. Most I know still teach the same way they always have, and probably won’t be spending money on too many games. However there is real educational value in some aspects of the game.

The question that we need to ask ourselves when thinking about any game activity is: “What is this teaching me (or them, if thinking about your children or your students) that I didn’t know before?”

Learning something is the process of taking something which is unknown and making it known. That’s as simple as it is.  Are you making anything known that wasn’t already when you are playing that computer game? If you are simply playing one level of one game over and over again nothing will happen except that you’ll be good at that one thing. You’ll really know that one thing, but nothing else.

If however when playing a music game you are constantly introducing new songs, and you use the music game as a vehicle to move forward with skills, then you’ll find this to be a well worthwhile educational experience.

Music game developers should consult instrument specialists when building games about specific instruments, so that playing the game does not negatively impact students technique when playing the real thing. I believe that most of the game companies do that research, however there is always cheaper versions who cut out the features and cut down on the educational value.

If you always ask this question: What is this game teaching me that I previously didn’t know? Then you’ll find that time spent on games will always help… besides being great fun!

Types Of Children’s Furniture

Posted by: admin  :  Category: toddler computer

Children’s furniture is furniture that is specifically designed to be used by children. There are two things that set children’s furniture apart from parent’s furniture. The obvious is size as children’s furniture is smaller. Secondly, the theme and color of children’s furniture is much different than parent’s furniture. It is often available in cute colors such as pastels. As a result, children’s furniture looks great in playrooms, nurseries, and child bedrooms.

Children’s Furniture Styles

There are many different styles of children’s furniture. The three main styles are as follows:

Traditional Children’s Furniture – Light oak stained finish to classic white, tradional children’s furniture, as the name suggests, is traditional with little fanfare. It is made to look great in any child’s room.

Theme Children’s Furniture – From Fireman to sports star, depending on your child’s interests, there is undoubtedly a set of theme children’s furniture to accompany it. With rocking chairs to child desks, theme children’s furniture is extremely popular.

Handpainted Children’s Furniture – Handpainted children’s furniture might conjure up the thoughts of a local craft fair but many sets are now done by artists that produce unique pieces that are fun. You do not have to sacrifice durability and quality for uniqueness. Handpainted children’s furniture is really more than a piece of children’s furniture as it truly is a piece of art.

Types of Children’s Furniture

Though many different accent pieces are available such as clothes stands and rocking horses are available, these children’s furniture pieces are the centerpieces and staples of a child’s room.

Children’s Beds

There is a period of time when a child is no longer an infant and requires a crib yet is not old enough for an adult bed. A toddler cot is a great middle step to before being old enough for an adult bed. Toddler cots are built close to the ground so you don’t have to worry about your child falling out. They are also available in themes that look great in a toddler’s bedroom where as an adult bed would look out of place.

Child Desks

Child’s Desks are an important piece of furniture for their development. They are use to sitting behind a desk at school and there is an excellent chance that as adults your child will sit behind a desk for extended periods of time. Having a desk to work on the computer, read a book, or complete homework is important as it reinforces good study skills; certainly an asset as they continue their education process.

Seating Options

From child table and chair sets to simple rocking chairs, having a chair in the playroom is a great children’s furniture piece which invites your child to have quite time and read a book, play with playdoh or draw with crayons. Adult table and chair sets are too difficult for your child to reach and get comfortable. Whereas children’s size table and chair sets are great alternatives. As other children’s furniture, child table and chair sets come in great themes from ballerinas to all star sports that are fun and inviting.

Storage Solutions

Storage solutions for kid’s rooms is a necessity. How many times have you insisted that your child clean their room only to go in their an hour later only to see it in the same disarray it was earlier. Sometimes, this is a result of simply not having enough storage options for your child to put the plethora of toys away. Toy boxes are a great solution to this age old problem as they are child size to reach the lid and come in great themes that look great in any child’s room.

Bookshelves

Children love books and they have a lot of them! Parents, grandparents and friends love giving books to children as it promotes learning and imagination. But keeping the books in a cardboard box tucked away in the closet results in the “out of sight, out of mind” syndrome that doesn’t lend itself well to getting full use of all those books. A child bookshelf is a great way to keep those books front and center and encourage your child to pick one out at a moment’s notice whenever they feel the urge. Children’s bookshelves are a great addition to any child’s bedroom or playroom.

Children’s Furniture Requirements

One of the main considerations in purchasing children’s furniture, is to ensure that it is tough and durable. Children are rough on everything, especially in their developmental years, before they learn the benefit (and necessity) of taking care of their belongings. As a result, children’s furniture should be built to withstand the constant interaction of children. Many reputable manufacturers field test their product for this very reason. Also, safety is a consideration when purchasing children’s furniture. Look for rounded corners as an example. Lastly, children’s furniture should be fun! It should capture their imagination and call out to them in a way that envokes their positive emotions. This is a very popular trend today as more and more manufacturers of children’s furniture are producing new products that keep this in mind.

In conclusion, when choosing children’s furniture there is a lot to think about. Understanding what you are looking for in terms of style, size and theme is the best place to start.

Who Plays Video Games?

Posted by: admin  :  Category: toddler computer

With the great number of video games for sale and the huge variety of video games that are downloadable through the internet, it probably will not surprise you to learn that 60 percent of the American population has played some kind of video game. They are rivalling baseball as the great American pastime. Indeed, there are versions of baseball and NFL available as video games. Video games grew out of our fascination with computers and they are played by young and old alike. Video game playing is not limited to kids and teenagers, although children are starting to play video games at younger and more tender ages.

Nearly half of all American children aged 4 to 6 are estimated to have played video games, and a new market has sprung up to develop video games to involve toddlers and make computers more attractive for them to use. More attractive to children! Kids take to computers better than ducks to water, and stay connected for life. As of 2005, a quarter of the children in the aged four to six age group who have played computer games say it is a regular habit. The toddler, of course, cannot yet talk about their video game habits. But their parents report that children, especially boys have lost interest in playing with their traditional toys like action figures, Legos, and puzzles and prefer video games. However, kids are not the primary users of video games. Their parents played video games as children and teenagers.

We are now experiencing the phenomenon of second-generation video game players. Video games have been around since the 1970’s, clearly enough time for some third generation players to come upon the scene. Side to side, mouse to mouse with the kids are the adults who have never stopped playing or who began playing as adults. Adults represent the largest group of video game players and the average age of video gamers is 29. Certainly, the older generation has the good sense to avoid this costly, time consuming habit, you may think. Think again – 17 percent of gamers are 50 years of age and older. If this keeps up, retirement communities are no longer able to offer Bingo and Cribbage as recreational bonuses. The baby boom generation will head into its twilight years amid Dungeons and Dragons competitions.

The joy of mindlessly zoning out in virtual reality instead of actually doing something or speaking to someone is so compelling that video games are now a multibillion-dollar business. The video game companies often rival the stock exchange earnings of energy corporations and pharmaceutical companies. Nintendo often beats the earnings of major Hollywood studios. In 2004, 9.9 billion dollars was spent on video games, on consoles like PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube, and on hand-held systems like Game Boy and Nintendo DS in the U.S. alone. Of course, America is the leader in video game retail but the rest of the world is far behind, making video game stocks a hot commodity. But no one is interested in “playing ” the stock market anymore; they’re all to busy playing video games.

Protect Your Child From Mr. Germ

Posted by: admin  :  Category: toddler computer

Meet Mr. Germ – a crafty invader targeting everyone from infants to adults. His goal is to make us sick! The cold and flu season is his favorite time of the year, and everyone is a target. Once he finds a ‘victim’, he can spread his germs from one person to another in a fairly rapid chain reaction.

First, let’s dispense with the notion that cold or wet weather will make you sick. It won’t. But germs will. Knowledge is a powerful tool against the germ menace and knowing the definition of a germ is a good place to start.

There are four major types of germs: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. For people in most countries including the U.S., our main concern is bacteria and viruses. Bacteria causes infections such as sore throats, ear infections, pneumonia and even cavities.

Viruses are the germs that cause chickenpox, measles, flu, and other diseases. They can live for a while on things like doorknobs, a computer mouse or any other surface.

Bottom line – germs are found everywhere in all kinds of places.

For adults, particularly those with infants, toddlers or children in school, wellness begins with common sense. Since most germs spread through the air from sneezing, coughing or even just breathing, it’s important to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze and your mouth when coughing. If you use a tissue, be sure to dispose of it immediately and wash your hands.

Of course, germs also spread through sweat, saliva and blood. Just a simple handshake followed by touching your nose can cause germs to spread. Since Mr. Germ’s worst fear is soap and water, washing your hands often can help to keep Mr. Germ on the run.

Have you ever stopped to think about the number of germs that are transmitted by shopping carts? How many hands – both adult and children – have grabbed the handle of the cart you select? If you have an infant or toddler in the seat, think of the germs that could be transmitted by another child’s drooling or even something as gross as a leaky diaper!

Many stores now provide antiseptic wipes by the entrance so you can disinfect the handle and seat. Use them! As the saying goes “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

But is this enough for a child who hasn’t built an immune system that’s sufficient to fight off the many viruses that run rampant these days? There is something else you can do to foil Mr. Germ.

A great creation, known as a shopping cart cover, was designed by a grandmother to help protect her grandchildren from illness. The cover typically does extra duty as a diaper bag and purse, plus a toy and bottle holder. It quickly and easily rolls up to the size of a small duffle-type bag. You can hold your child with one hand, unroll the cart cover with the other, and be ready to in about 30 seconds. Best of all, they’re colorful and attractive so your child goes shopping in style.

The design of the cover protects not only anything in reach of busy hands but bare legs as well. No part of your child will come in contact with an area touched by another child.

One other area of concern is restaurant highchairs. How many times have you found the tray to be sticky or otherwise unclean and the seat contains food from the previous user. This makes Mr. Germ very happy. You can foil his plan because the same cover used for the shopping cart doubles as a highchair cover. There are also covers made specifically for high chairs that typically come with placemats for the tray.

The best way to protect your family from germs is to steer clear of the things that can spread them and cause that inevitable chain reaction. The first step is to use common sense to protect against Mr. Germ. Then, focus on any products that can prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses. If just one of these suggestions works and saves a trip to the doctor, you’re ahead of the game.

Review Of Honey, We’re Killing The Kids!

Posted by: admin  :  Category: toddler computer

Honey, We’re Killing the Kids is a nutrition and healthy living reality show that premiered in the United States on The Learning Channel (TLC) in 2006. The show originated in the UK as a BBC healthy living series. The US installment is a one hour weekly series hosted by Dr. Lisa Hark.

The show, intended to be an intervention—or well executed wake up call – to American families who lead a predominantly unhealthy lifestyle, has been criticized for using extreme computer generated images of what the children will look like if their lifestyle is not immediately altered by their parents. The families who are featured on the show have as least two children who range in age from toddler through teenager. One, if not all, of the family members are overweight or obese and usually eat fast or processed foods and log in far more television, computer and video game hours than any time spent exercising.

By the time we first meet the parents of the family being featured in the episode, the children have already met with doctors to assess their overall health, including food intake and lifestyle habits. The parents join nutritionist Lisa Hark to view life-size computer generated images that show what each of their children will look like by the age of 40 if their eating and lifestyle does not change. The images usually startle the parents; the pictures show extremely overweight, unhealthy and unkempt individuals who truly present a worst-case scenario. Critics of the show claim that these images are very extreme, perpetuating the myth that all overweight people are dirty, sloppy and unhappy people. The show is guilty of adding body piercings, unruly facial hair and mullets on people who otherwise might not wear them

However, the wake up call is enough to get a commitment from the parents, who thus embark on a month long health improvement plan, featuring a radical change in diet and a bevy of exercise and family outings that replace the hours once spent in front of the TV. The success of the program varies from family to family and the stress of the changes usually falls upon the mother who is accountable for learning how to make tofu attractive to her children. Many times the father puts up as much a fuss as the kids. The mothers are trying to eat healthy and quit smoking themselves and often crack under the pressure of too many changes at once.

At the end of each episode, once weight changes and lifestyle changes are noted, the computer generates a new set of pictures – usually showing not only a thinner 40 year old, but one in snappy professional clothes bearing an overall clean cut, meticulous and happy presence.

The show allows us one more peek into the family’s life. The cameras visit them one month after the show stops filming. Most of the families are filmed smiling and happy, riding together on new bikes, and each appears to have lost at least ten pounds. Only one family during Honey’s first season refused to be filmed for the follow up; we can surmise their bikes are gathering dust in the garage.
